Harrison Bergeron

Harrison Bergeron was a very interesting short story. It showed us how equality is not good to a certain extent. Everyone was made in God's image and they shouldn't have to wear handicaps to make everyone equal. This story shows that uniqueness and individuality is good and perfectly fine in the world and that we shouldn't all be equal. We should embrace our traits and characteristics that we have been given.
Common level one questions are; Who is Harrison Bergeron? What are handicaps? When does this take place in the future?
Common level two questions are; What is the need for equality? Why is Harrison Bergeron seen as a threat to society?
Common level three questions are; What is equality? Could this really happen in the future? Is equality better than individuality?
The plot of the story:
Exposition: The author tells when the story takes place and the main idea of the book, along with explaining the characters of the story.
Rising Action: George and Hazel talk about the handicaps. The T.V. show with the ballerinas is interrupted by a news bulletin. The announcement is that Harrison Bergeron has escaped from jail, and is a very big threat to society. Harrison then crashes into the studio where the ballerinas are performing and rips off all his handicaps and declares himself Emperor and chooses his queen.
Climax: While Harrison and the ballerina are floating in the air, Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicaper General, comes into the studio with a double barreled ten-gauge shotgun and shoots and kills the two of them before they hit the ground.
Falling Action: Diana Moon Glampers tells the musicians they have ten seconds to put on there handicaps or they will be killed. Right then, the Bergeron's T.V. burns out.
Resolution: Hazel begins to cry again, but when asked by George why, she does not remember. She said it was something sad on the T.V. and George tells her to forget it and she answers, "I always do".
